Barring 'extreme long shot,' Arlington Park racing is ending

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. (AP) Unlike a lot of old racetracks past their primes, there are not crumped up tickets strewn all over the grounds of Arlington Park. And the mood around the track is festive.

Guests - never called customers or patrons during its glory days - line up for drinks and pizza and rush to the rail when the horses reach the starting gate. Rare are the reminders that Arlington Park is on the brink of ending a run that lasted more than a century, (MORE)

Monomoy Girl, 2-time Eclipse winner, retires after injury

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) Monomoy Girl, a champion who won the Breeders' Cup Distaff and Eclipse Award as a filly and mare in a stellar racing career, has been retired after sustaining an injury at Churchill Downs.

Spendthrift Farm, part of an ownership group that included My Racehorse and Madaket Stables, announced on its web site Wednesday that Monomoy Girl was injured Tuesday while training at the storied track. Trainer Brad Cox said the seven-time Grade 1 winner came back "a little off" on her right front leg following a routine gallop. X-rays revealed a non-displaced fracture of the sesamoid bone. (MORE)

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) Points from races in the series that earn berths in the Kentucky Derby won't be awarded to any horse trained by an individual who is suspended from entering the Kentucky Derby in 2022. (MORE)

Baffert charged by New York Racing, scheduled for hearing

NEW YORK (AP) The New York Racing Association has charged Bob Baffert with detrimental conduct and scheduled a hearing for the two-time Triple Crown-winning trainer to respond to those allegations.

NYRA announced the beginning of the hearing process Friday, adding the organization believes Baffert's conduct warrants suspension or revocation of his right to train horses or enter races at Aqueduct Racetrack, Belmont Park and Saratoga Race Course. (MORE)

Judge questions treatment of suspended horse trainer Baffert

NEW YORK (AP) A New York judge was sympathetic Monday to horse trainer Bob Baffert's claims that his May suspension by the New York Racing Association - after Kentucky Derby winner Medina Spirit failed a postrace drug test - was unconstitutional.

U.S. District Judge Carol Bagley Amon at a Brooklyn hearing repeatedly pressed a lawyer for the racing association to explain why the suspension was issued before Baffert was given a chance to defend himself. (MORE)

John Rotz, Hall of Fame jockey, dies at 86

(AP) -- John Rotz, a Hall of Fame jockey who won the Preakness and Belmont Stakes during his career, has died at 86.

He died at his farm in Warrensburg, Illinois, southwest of Champaign, on Monday, according to the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame, which spoke to his family. No cause of death was given. (MORE)
