Scouting Report

The Bosa Boys appear set to join the Mannings, Matthews, Gronkowskis, Watts and Fullers as one of the NFL's legendary football families.

Those bloodlines and the fact that he starred at St. Thomas Aquinas - of the richest recruiting beds in the country - made Nick Bosa a highly prized prospect when he followed Joey (and uncle Erik) to Ohio State. Their father, John Bosa, played defensive end at Boston College and spent three seasons in the NFL with the Miami Dolphins. Joey was the third overall pick in the 2016 draft by the then-San Diego Chargers. It's possible Nick will jump the line and go even higher in the 2019 draft.

Nick wasted no time in living up to his lineage, ranking second on a talented Buckeyes squad in sacks with five as a true freshman before exploding as a sophomore for 16 tackles for loss and 8.5 sacks, earning him the Big Ten's Defensive Lineman of the Year in 2017 and an American Football Coaches Association first-team All-American.

A core muscle injury suffered against TCU in September abruptly ended Bosa's 2018 campaign but it is worth recalling how dominant his junior season began. Bosa was leading the Buckeyes with 14 tackles, six tackles for loss, four sacks and two fumble recoveries (including one for a touchdown) before suffering the injury that required surgery and obviously a close check by team doctors at the Combine.

By now, the comparisons to Joey were rampant and understandable. The two had virtually identical stats through 30 games with Nick accomplishing his production in roughly 600 fewer snaps.

If there's a knock on Nick entering the NFL, he lacks the elite height and arm length typical of dominant edge rushers.

Bosa's compact frame makes him pound for pound one of the most powerful players in the 2019 draft. He shows the quick-twitch explosiveness to explode out of his stance as well as excellent snap anticipation, frequently beating college tackles with a pure speed rush.

Unlike many rocked-up players, Bosa shows good core flexibility to bend around the corner while maintaining and even building upon his speed. Stalks his target like a lion on the prowl, deftly moving through traffic and pouncing on his prey with startling speed and explosive power. Compliments his exciting physical attributes with terrific technique, including an array of pass rush moves.
